Connecting LeakNet to Your Wi-Fi: Troubleshooting Tips
Common Issue: Many smart home devices, including LeakNet, need a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection to work properly. Sometimes your router might try to connect them to a 5 GHz band instead, causing setup problems.
Solutions:
Option 1: Separate Your Wi-Fi Bands
- Most routers let you create separate names (SSIDs) for your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
- Log into your router's settings (check the router's label for instructions, often using 192.168.1.1 in your web browser).
- Look for WiFi settings to split the bands.
- Consider keeping your existing WiFi SSID and appending "-5GHz" to your 5GHz network name for easy transition (like "HomeNetwork-5GHz"). This way all your existing devices will re-connect naturally.
Option 2: Create a Guest Network
- If you can't split bands, make a 2.4 GHz only guest network in your router settings.
- This is a good security practice for smart devices anyway!
Option 3: Get Closer (Temporarily)
- If the above aren't possible, try setting up LeakNet closer to the router. This can force it onto the 2.4 GHz band which has better range. Once connected, you can move it back.
Option 4: WiFi Repeater
- If signal strength is generally poor, a WiFi repeater can extend your 2.4GHz range specifically.
Common Issue: Some newer phones/tablets may have the ability to connect to multiple WiFi networks at once and this can cause confusion in the registration process.
Solutions:
Option 1: If using a phone to register, disconnect from WiFi before starting and instead use your cell network to start the registration process. Only connect to the FlowReporter WiFi when instructed to.
Option 2: If your device does not have cell signal, when instructed to connect to the FlowReporter WiFi, do this without leaving the app.
- Pull down to open the notification screen
- Pull down the arrow on WiFi
- Click FlowReporter-[XXXX] (where XXXX will be a unique code)
- Swipe up to close the settings without ever leaving the FlowReporter App
Still Having Trouble?
- Double-check your Wi-Fi password: Make sure you're using the correct one for the 2.4 GHz network. Try using your mobile device and copy and paste the password once you have confirmed it works.
- Check the signal strength in the location of install. Sometimes there are a lot of pipes in the way so consider moving the panel temporarily to get better signal during setup.
- Other Things to Investigate: If problems persist, a deeper dive might be needed. Our support team can help you check things like firewall settings and your router's DHCP configuration. See this article for firewall requirements.
